a morning invitation

a blue jay is eating his breakfast worm,
head cocked to make sure
i take notice,
as i sit here endlessly tapping
computer keys,
and i realize that he's inviting me out
to the cool spring day, humidity swept away
by last night's thunderstorm,
to the fresh breeze and the sunlight
and the smell of green growing things,
to the squirrel curled into a somersault,
nose tucked into feet for a nap,
and the mockingbird singing
his aria to the day.

in which violet finds the essence of florida...

She stood by the sea wall, watching him. He glided smooth and swift through the bay waters, heading toward her then veering off to the south, towards the pier. A huge dark fin broke the surface about 5 feet from him, and she caught her breath, then realized it was a dolphin, not a shark. The dolphin seemed to be following him and as he gently slapped the water with his paddle it swam nearer and nearer, until he reached down and patted its back. She was fascinated. "That's so cool!" she shouted, and he shouted back,"Happens all the time. You should learn to paddle board."

THIS was Florida, she thought. Dolphins, and manatees, and stand up paddleboarding in the bay on a sunny afternoon.

rilke, on love...

Love consists in this, that two solitudes protect and touch and greet each other.

giving thanks

for purple impatiens

and white ones, too

for "high tea" on easter sunday

(for a daughter who bakes scones)

for eggs dyed pretty
and young girls in easter finery —
for grandmothers and daughters
and mothers and fathers —
and friends who bring
laughter with them

for cool rainswept nights
and candlelight —
for birdsong and frogsong
and the song of wind in the pines

for grace in this oh so imperfect world.

resurrection day

The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.' Now I have told you."

Matthew 28: 5-7

waiting for easter

there's a small dog in our household

who thinks Easter means good food and good company.

I think she has the right idea...

reflections on good friday

why do they call it good?
i wonder,
being not well
catechized —
this day of crushed hopes
and broken dreams,
this dying of one
who wronged
this crucifixion
of the

"because he poured out his life unto death,"

i read.

why do they call it good?
this day of sorrows,
of goodbyes,
of sacrifice.

"my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

"they have taken my Lord away"

"he was crushed for our iniquities"

then i read,
"it is finished."

and on the third day,
he rose...

"Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the House of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith..."

(Isa. 53:12, Ps 22:1, Mt. 27:45, Jn 20:13, Isa 53:5, Jn 19:30, Heb 10:19-22)

love hopes all things...

Who so loves believes the impossible.

giving thanks...

"We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure
so that we despaired even of life.
Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death.
But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves
but on God, who raises the dead."
—II Corinthians 1:8-9

sometimes i feel like a tree whose lifeless branches
will never bear fruit again
and then, somehow
the sap rises
and life springs

thanking God for each moment
of life.
thanking you,

for praying.

everything's coming up roses

i felt good today.
and it felt really good,
to feel good.

corner view: home

... is morning light streaming through the windows

... is a cozy place to nap in the sun

... is the smell of freshly-baked bread

... is a garden chair and a good book

... is flowers blooming

... is light to chase away the shadows

the mystery of pain

Pain has an element of blank;

It cannot recollect
When it began, or if there were
A day when it was not.

It has no future but itself,
Its infinite realms contain
Its past, enlightened to perceive
New periods of pain.

— emily dickinson

it's been a weary couple of weeks.
and sometimes i don't understand the why of it all.
sometimes the pain is all there is in the world.
but sometimes a friend reaches out with a helping hand,
or a word of comfort, or a song in the night—
and the shadows recede for a time...

"The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them;
and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose."

in which violet searches for spring

She sat alone in the dining room and stared out the window. A man ran by with his Weimeraner, followed by a woman walking her toy poodle. It made her miss Sadie — probably her mother would forget to walk her and then she'd be all hyper and get into mischief. The harbor was quiet except for one boat sailing in slowly with a man and two children on board, the kids swinging their legs through the railings and over the side. They were wind-blown and giggling; she started to wave but then remembered where she was and put her hand down just in time. She looked around to make sure nobody had noticed. The lady at the next table was reading the paper as she finished her coffee. Two tables down a man in a Peruvian poncho and a cowboy hat was feeding oatmeal to his elderly mother. They were lost in their own worlds.

The waiter brought her tea and a whole wheat bagel with raspberry cream cheese. Asked her if she wanted a paper, and was she waiting for someone? "No, just me today."

Just her. She'd quit her job because she wanted an adventure, packed two suitcases, cleaned out her savings, left her dog with her mother, and hit the road, headed south. She was sick of winter and determined to drive until she found spring. So here she was, in Florida of all places. Sitting in a pink hotel, eating breakfast, with a bamboo plant for company.

It wasn't much of an adventure so far.

everything changes

the maple is full-green, now,

bare branches clothed
where once
the thread-like blossoms
offered their fragile beauty
to the skies.

we saw your face,
tiny and full of grace
and beauty —
and we fell in love.

still loving the woman
you've become —
as you are.

playing catch-up

i am sick a lot.
and sometimes i am not.
then i play catch up, but i never do
catch up,
until the next time.
and while i’m never catching up,
i sometimes grow anxious
and distant
and small (minded)
and mean.
all wrapped up
in the things to do,
to live,
