a morning invitation

a blue jay is eating his breakfast worm,
head cocked to make sure
i take notice,
as i sit here endlessly tapping
computer keys,
and i realize that he's inviting me out
to the cool spring day, humidity swept away
by last night's thunderstorm,
to the fresh breeze and the sunlight
and the smell of green growing things,
to the squirrel curled into a somersault,
nose tucked into feet for a nap,
and the mockingbird singing
his aria to the day.

Beautiful words and descriptions. I can envisage that cute squirrel exactly as you described him.

I agree with Loree. (My middle name is Loree, and it is pronounced to rhyme with "agree"!) I can just picture that squirrel. I can also see the blue jay with his head cocked, worm hanging out of his beak, looking at you and inviting you out.
I also agree with Elizabeth. Your writing is indeed rare and beautiful.

That's the kind of invitation, you must say yes to! Wonderfully expressive words to describe an every day moment with hidden magic, just waiting for you to find it--and you did!

As for the mockingbird, after teaching a book with it in the title, I'd love to actually hear one (and not from a movie or tape).
Lucky you!:)

I accepted a similar invitation Thursday evening after school.
I got out of my car which is now parked outside the garage (other wise I would have missed the invite)and 'heard' my name being called. You'll see who called me when you visit my blog.:)

Funny how some invitations are so compelling that we can't refuse, and we're so pleasantly surprised when we accept them. Lovely.

Have a wonderful Sunday.
