friendship by post

"A friendship can weather most things and thrive in thin soil; but it needs a little mulch of letters and phone calls and small, silly presents every so often - just to save it from drying out completely."

—Pam Brown

i got a little "friendship mulch" in the post, today, from madame woolfenbell, in belgium. there's nothing like an artist's handwriting on thick paper to lift my spirits, except perhaps small handmade gifts wrapped in brown paper parcels :)

I noticed the wonderful handwriting immediately. An artist's, you say? Perfect!
My best friend (since the 1960s) and I live two provinces apart (and she's in the process of moving to England!!!) but she's great about little gifts by mail. I'm not as good as that, but I am the queen of the casual phone call.

Real mail, especially that containing lovely little gifts, is such a day (week!) brightener!

Maybe it's because I sit at the computer for so much of the day and correspond most often by keyboard, but the sight of the handwritten letter just grabbed my heart. Lovely.
