may-flower.

Pink, small, and punctual,
Aromatic, low,
Covert in April,
Candid in May,
Dear to the moss,
Known by the knoll,
Next to the robin
In every human soul.
Bold little beauty,
Bedecked with thee,
Nature forswears
Antiquity.

— Emily Dickinson

Leslie,
I adore this poem! She has given this little purple beauty such a character has she not "covert in April/Candid in May." How superb! Dear to the moss and known by the knoll. My not only a personality but intimate relationships with grasses and hills as well. I wonder is she speaking of the color when she says "next to the robin" and in every human soul ah, the purple of courage or boldness, and nature itself, when bedecked with such bold beauty can never show its age. Well that is my little stab at paraphrase and rather poor since I have not studied this poem but it is indeed one of the most lovely May Day verses I have seen today. Thank you Miss Leslie! Happy May Day to you!
xoxo,
Noelle

Lovely tribute to the first day of May and to a gifted poet.

My general English juniors are struggling with her poems--they don't understand why she can't call something its proper name instead of making a riddle.
"The Narrow Fellow in the Grass" really threw them as did one about a train. They didn't get that the first poem was about a snake and in the second poem, the horse references were metaphors for the train. (I'm usually very tired after that class.)

The early-May promise of spring, and if this one is any indication then it augers well for a colourful month !

Nice choice of words, and photo.

Have a good week !
