the azaleas are blooming...

...and they always make me think of my grandmother.

an observation.

have you noticed how
the weathered, dying things possess
a chaotic richness,
a color borne from loss,
a patina of dignity
unknown (or unnoticed)
by the crass sheen of

i picked some flowers for you... thank you for all your warm and kind and funny comments on my anniversary post. I've been offline for a few days... sick again, but distracting myself with The Hunger Games trilogy, which my daughter has been badgering me to read for about a month.

Just a small note of warning if you're thinking about reading it - it's completely addicting. Which partly explains my lack of visits to your lovely blogs.

I'm on the third book, so I ought to resurface, soon...

giving thanks for a walk on the beach...

...with my best friend.

Loving is not just looking at each other, it's looking in the same direction.

garden musings...

it's been a beauty of a day... warm sun, cool breeze, the dog sniffing things out in the garden and me, meandering about with the camera or sitting with notebook and pencil, woolgathering.

don't you just love that word?

i don't think this spider indulges in much woolgathering, however.  he strikes me as an arachnid with ambition.

and speaking of ambition, i need to do some laundry and wash my hair.
not to mention, tackle a small mountain of odious paperwork.

perhaps the garden spider would lend me some of his resolve?

i led them with cords of human kindness...

there are times when the pain of life obliterates its color —

when quiet waters seem a thing of the past

and the heart cries

and then love arrives by post.

in living color.

a sunset with emily dickinson

We learn in the retreating
    How vast an one
Was recently among us.
    A perished sun
Endears in the departure
    How doubly more
Than all the golden presence
    It was before!

because i need some light and color in my days...

(linking to macro monday)

a lament.

i have this pain in my gut
and lately it almost never
goes away
and it makes me afraid
of life and death,
both —
and i've been here before
i never get used to the darkness
and he says he will
go before me
and be with me,
God does,
but sometimes it doesn't feel
like that
so i tell him.
he felt like that too,

"my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

do pink clouds have silver linings too?

Every cloud has its silver lining but it is sometimes a little difficult to get it to the mint.

mary oliver, on the uses of sorrow...

Someone I loved once gave me
a box full of darkness.

It took me years to understand
that this, too, was a gift.

giving thanks... for your friendship

"Friendship is being with the other in joy and sorrow,
even when we cannot increase the joy or decrease the sorrow.
It is a unity of souls that gives nobility and sincerity to love.
Friendship makes all of life shine brightly.
Blessed are those who lay down their lives for their friends."

today i am sad.
today i am sick.
today i am in pain.
today i cried.
today is like so many others...

today i am loved.
today i have known compassion.
today my feet are warm in fuzzy boots.
today i laughed.
today is like so many others…

happy new year!

And He who sits on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." And He said, "Write, for these words are faithful and true."
