powerless (reflections on a tropical storm)

Hurricane season has arrived, bringing with it tropical storm Debby.

She was a flighty storm, floating around in the gulf for several days and wreaking havoc
in the form of floods, wind damage, and massive power outages.

The first night of candlelight was rather romantic... and then the sun rose and the breezes died and the Florida heat and humidity melted us down to a shadow of our former selves.

By the time the power crews arrived, we were standing in our front yards, waving our arms and looking like creatures from a zombie flick.

It's a good thing those guys were able to restore power.
Who knows what we might have become?

i guess i can pack light.

The real voyage of discovery lies
not in seeking new landscapes,
but in having new eyes.

sew sew.

I had some hemming to do, so I pulled the old machine from the closet.

After dusting a few months/years from its faux-tweed case,

I decided it needed a photo-shoot, to make up for my previous neglect.

It was thrilled.

A sewing machine always works better when it's appreciated...

simple things

to sit in the shade
with a little dog
sleeping beside you
on a summer day,
is a gift
beyond reasoning.

the gecko as art.

Does he know what he created?

i'm a little daisy crazy.

WITH little here to do or see
Of things that in the great world be,
Sweet Daisy! oft I talk to thee,
For thou art worthy,
Thou unassuming commonplace
Of Nature, with that homely face,
And yet with something of a grace
Which Love makes for thee!

when the world crumbles around us

Beneath it all,

the beauty and the pain,

below the swift rivers which carry

our hopes and nightmares;

undergirding the fathoms of our loneliness,

the canyons of our despair,

the wild woods through which we wander,

is You.
