orphaned by the storm

Yes folks, we are having another tropical storm. It's not a direct hit this time, so things are just the way I like them - enough rain and wind to make for a cozy day indoors (with occasional photo safaris outside to assess the damage.) So far, only the acorns have suffered, but I imagine the squirrels will consider this, literally, a windfall for their winter stores (like squirrels in Florida need to store food for the winter. Still, they do it anyway...)

On another note, I had a little visit to the ER this past weekend, to make sure I wasn't having a heart attack (I wasn't.) Just an upper back strain or a pinched nerve or something, which had the unfortunate result of wrapping itself around to squeeze my chest in a very uncomfortable manner. And since I am in that lovely heart attack age range, and women, as most of you know, often have atypical heart attack symptoms, I thought I'd better get it checked out. So all is well, I am typing this with heat packs against my back, and I am extremely grateful that this latest crisis had a simple resolution. (This has certainly been a weird couple of months, even by my standards.)

For all of you out there still wondering if the storm is coming your way, and battening down your hatches, know that we here in Florida are thinking of you...

things i saw today

today i saw a rainbow,

and i thought,

god loves me.

i saw three ravens too,

cacophonous silhouettes, flapping

in the slash pine

as it reached silently for the morning.

and this is life —

color and god and pandemonium

and silence,

and reaching for the morning.

catnapping (with apologies to canines everywhere)

"I love a good nap. Sometimes it's the only thing getting me out of bed in the morning."

tea and honey

“I don’t feel very much like Pooh today," said Pooh.

"There there," said Piglet. "I’ll bring you tea and honey until you do.”

 A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Beth sent me a little tea and honey the other day, in the form of some good books, all wrapped up in pretty paper. It was a lovely surprise on a day when I was feeling a bit post-traumatic stress-y. To quote another Milne philosopher, “Friendship," said Christopher Robin, "is a very comforting thing to have.”
