love, love, love.

It's been a rough week. We found out that Lady, our 13-yr-old basenji, has early kidney failure (as well as some chronic lung problems caused by old age.) The vet put her on a special diet and said she can live months to years. I'll take years, please! (She has no symptoms of kidney problems yet - the failure was caught in routine blood work during her check-up.) So we've been giving her lots of extra love.

When one is mostly housebound due to chronic illness, as I am, the companionship of a beloved pet becomes extra valued. Lady is such a good friend - she comforts me and makes me laugh every day. Now it's my turn to return the favor.

Here's a favorite Mary Oliver poem, about her dog Percy, to sum things up:

I Ask Percy How I Should Live My Life
Mary Oliver

Love, love, love, says Percy.
And hurry as fast as you can
along the shining beach, or the rubble, or the dust.
Then, go to sleep.
Give up your body heat, your beating heart.
Then, trust.

What a sweet picture of Lady; you can just tell she is very special....

I think God put a special place in our heart for pets to fill and once connected it's forever....

Another request for the prayer list! I will pray for many days that equal up to years!

I hope you'll have many more years together. Pets become part of the family and Lady is a very sweet dog.

Thoughts for the day said...

It is always sad news for us when our 'friends' become sick, my own Smudge kitty was put down on Tuesday. She was 16 years old and I miss her every day. She had congestive heart failure and maybe a tumor.
I said good bye to a very sweet lady.

i hate when our furry babies are diagnosed with anything.

kidney failure is what our sophie had and it was caught quite late. she had been sick after staying in a kennel where she caught kennel cough {even with her vaccination} and then went down hill from there.

i'm so happy your vet caught it early and i pray that her diet helps control it.

if she starts having accidents in the house, even one, let your vet know.

my prayers for her and YOU and both of your "healthy days" are WAY up there... at the top of my prayer list.

xoxo

Best wishes to you and your sweet Lady dog. She has such a cute expression on her face in the photo. It is good that you have been made aware of her health issues so that you can help her with a special diet.

Oh, Leslie... I'm so sorry about Lady. Do pray she may be with you a good while longer yet! :o) She's a BEAUTY! Oh, those milk-chocolate eyes! *sigh*... Living with chronic illness myself, I know exactly how you feel about the improvement of the quality of your days with a fur-friend around. I couldn't do without our kitty Charlie. He has a way of being around more on extra tough days, and I love that. He's 13, so we're fortunate he's still with us and in OK health. When they need us more, it's always a privilege to return the favor, tough though it can be. LOVE the Mary Oliver poem! Did you know she's having a new poetry collection out in October, called Dog Songs. :o) I can't wait! Be taking good care there. Cuddles to Lady from me & Charlie ((HUGS))

I'm sorry to hear about your pups, Leslie, and I hope and pray she lives for years to come. Give Lady a hug from me.

oh!
how absolutely beautiful....both your sweet companion with the tender, thoughtful eyes
and the poetry
that brought a tear to my eyes
(I am hopelessly in love with my lab, Libby, and her kid sister Lucy) Libby is graying all over her face now, a grand old lady
with lots of years of loving behind her.)
Big hug and prayers for all the muchness your pup can muster out of
of life,
Jennifer

Lady is beautiful!
I hope that she has years left with you.
I recently had to say a final goodbye to my beautiful feline Smokey.
She was 18 and I miss her dearly!
