home.

“Home is the nicest word there is.”
― Laura Ingalls Wilder

“Where we love is home,
Home that the feet may leave,
but not our hearts.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes

“After all," Anne had said to Marilla once, "I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string.”
― L.M. MontgomeryAnne of Avonlea

“The ache for home lives in all of us. The safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.”
— Maya Angelou

You Will Find Your Way Home.”

30.

thirty years.
some days so filled up with joy,
it flowed right over to the next
and the one after that.
some days so dark
it was hard to see.
today you marked those years
with a dozen roses
and a question:
"How about 30 more years?"
to that i can only say,
"I do."

there's a lot to be said for breathing

yesterday i went to a cancer doctor.
i don't have cancer, i have a blood disorder,
among other things.
but lots of people there had cancer,
and they smiled and laughed
and made appointments for their chemo
and talked about movies and life
and were so darn
brave.
they probably don't feel brave.
they probably would rather be cowards
and healthy.
i know i would.
but i don't get to choose,
and neither do they.

i went for a walk after that —
put on my boots and my wool coat
and took the dog for a walk.
ephemeral raindrops brushed my lips
and melted there.
the dog sniffed things while the trees
reached for the sky
and a hawk soared above them,
into the gray.
i breathed in and out,
and kept doing it.
there's a lot to be said
for breathing.

my cup overfloweth...

"We need to be angels for each other, to give each other strength and consolation. Because only when we fully realize that the cup of life is not only a cup of sorrow but also a cup of joy will we be able to drink it."

― Henri Nouwen

I've been drinking from both cups lately, and so you haven't seen much of me, here. Nothing earth-shattering, at least not yet. Just life in this old world. But know that many of you have most certainly been angels of strength and consolation in my life, and for that I am truly grateful.

here's to hope...

Now may the God of hope
fill you with all joy and hope in believing,
that you may abound in hope
by the power of the Holy Spirit.
